Although the majority of food waste and food scraps are coming from households (53% at EU level according to 2016 data), large amounts of food waste are also coming from professional kitchens such as restaurants and public institutions.
Institutions such as kindergartens, hospitals, schools, and other, accumulate up to several hundred kilograms of food scraps each day.
FIRST IN ZAGREB TO USE GRIFFON MACHINES
Kindergarten Srednjaci was the first in Zagreb to solve food scraps with the innovative and green GRIFFON technology which brings savings of up to 80%.
Aware of the possible harmful effect inadequate food waste disposal has on the environment, but also burdened by the previous administration procedures and the rising costs of food waste disposal, this Zagreb kindergarten choose an innovative solution on the EU market.
Last month, a GRIFFON 150 device was installed in their kitchen with which they are now solving up to 150 kg of leftover food per day.
SIMPLE SOLUTION FOR FOOD SCRAPS/WASTE
“We decided to solve food scraps with the Griffon machine due to the simplicity of the process itself, but also because of the long-term savings it brings. Our staff no longer must worry about heavy bins and food waste storage, which is very important to us, as staff satisfaction is one of our top priorities. It is also a great thing that we have cut down the administration processes, because like this we are disposing food scraps even before they are classified as waste”, said Lidija Janeš, director of the Kindergarten „Srednjaci“ in Zagreb.
KINDERGARTEN IS A PROUD GREEN FLAG HOLDER
In addition to financial benefits and more satisfied kitchen employees, the kindergarten points out that they are proud to do something positive for the environment as well.
Srednjaci Kindergarten has already been recognized as a green kindergarten. Since April 2009 it has the status of an International Eco-School and is a holder of the green flag.
“We are glad that we are participating in small steps for a better future of the planet and reducing the ecological footprint. But also, above all, we’re setting a positive example for our children,” said director Janeš.
GRIFFON food waste machines are an innovative green solution for food scraps in the European Union, produced by the Croatian company Griffon Waste Management d.o.o. The devices are using a special microorganisms and enzymes for decomposition of food scraps on site, leaving only wastewater afterwards, which is then released into the existing water infrastructure system. They can bring big savings for the business, legally are approved and are contributing to green environmental goals.
